FACILITIES

The Center was purpose-built with the special needs of our students in mind.  The classrooms are bright, cheerful and spacious.

The Center has three therapy departments, all equipped with the latest in special assessment equipment.  Through intense fundraising efforts, the Center added a new wing of classrooms and a magnificent, well-equipped multi-purpose hall.

A gymnasium, equipped fitness centre and a swimming pool, managed by qualified Physical Education Teachers, are available for the physical benefits of the students. The Center also houses the following; medical clinic, observation room, two libraries, music room, arts & crafts room, wood-working shop.

These facilities along with the Center's emphasis on therapy, education, social skills, environment, nutrition and play make a virtual Utopia for a child's all-round development making Dubai Center for Special Needs is The very special place for very special people.

What's new at DCSN..

Snoezelen Room

What a strange word!

Snoezelen: is a contraction of the Dutch word “snuffelen” (to sniff) and “doezelen” (to snooze”.  However, it means discovering something by exploring an environment.

Snoezelen, also known as Multi Sensory Therapy, provides an environment allowing a person to select and receive sensory input of the type and amount he or she desires.  It is a popular approach aimed at providing the person with various forms of stimulation through a variety of technical devices distributed within a special environment.

Snoezelen aims at leisure, enjoyment and relaxation for people with developmental disability by enhancing their sensation and emotions.

The Snoezelen room at DCSN contains the following equipment,

  • Sound System
  • Water bed connected to the music sound system
  • Projector
  • Mirror ball and color wheels
  • Bubble tube
  • Fiber Optics
  • Ultra violet light with tactile toys
  • Bean bag chairs (floppy islands)

The rehab team at DCSN carefully screens students prior to receiving Snoezelen sessions.  Problems which respond well to Snoezelen therapy include: behavioral and attention problems, anxiety and hyperactivity.  Students with Cerebral Palsy also benefit from the relaxing environment of the Snoezelen room.

Students have been enjoying the Snoezelen experience at DCSN, as shown by positive changes in their behavior.

“Pretend” Playroom

A room whose name speaks for itself…

Let me check your temperature..Hush! the baby is trying to sleep..Is it tea party time yet?  Your shirt needs ironing, let me iron it for you..Can you help me mop the floor please? We may have visitors for dinner..I will be wearing my princess dress tonight..Have you seen my crown?

Could there be a place where students could not be more creative and imaginative?  The “Pretend” playroom is designed for toddlers in the Nursery section allowing developmental programs to be stressed and challenging children to learn.  In the large, colorful room for 2-1/2 to five year-olds, there is a balance between free creative playtime that leads to socialization, and structured planned activities that promote interest in learning readiness skills.

At the “Pretend” playroom, we advocate a child-centered learn-through-play approach as supported by the Center’s guidelines and frameworks.  All children have a progress profile, with written observations identifying milestones and stages of development reached.

As they develop their skills, children will be observed and assessed and the different areas of learning will be outline in their IEPs (Individual Educational Plans).  These areas include personal, social and emotional development, communication, language and literacy, mathematical development, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical development and creative development.
